Concept art for Spielberg's Tintin

As promised here are the first pics from the Tintin book.

I didn't do a lot of work on Tintin, as it had largely moved into production at Weta Digital by the time I joined the design team at Weta Workshop. But it was a great thrill to work for a legend like Steven Spielberg. This was the very first time I designed an environment for production and I was lucky enough to be successful with the interior. My exterior design was not chosen, as Steven felt a piece by Robert Baldwin was more successful. Of course these images are now almost 4 years old and I've come a long way since, but that is the nature of working under NDA's! Hope you enjoy :)

Environment Mood Studies

Here's a wee update on an environment piece I posted recently. Although I was satisfied with it at the time, my friend and colleague Eduardo Pena encouraged me to take it further. While he liked the initial pic, he suggested trying new lighting scenarios and times of day with the same image. It was great advice and it inspired me to put in a little more work.

Eduardo is a very skilled artist and a very hard worker but most importantly he has a great attitude. Where I might get frustrated he sees every failure or difficulty as an opportunity to learn something. It's an admirable way to look at things, and pretty helpful in a production environment where work is discarded at an alarming rate irrelevant of any small victories you may have had in its creation :P

I have another version underway too, that I will sneak into this post at some point in the future.

The Art of Tintin hits shelves!

I believe today is the official release of this new tome from Weta.

Several hundred pages packed with conceptual design, production art, CG look development and beauty renders of the final 3D assets. My friend and colleague Chris Guise has spent months on the layout and design of this book and it looks really great. When I first started at Weta some three and a half years ago, design was winding down on Tintin. I was lucky to sneak in on the last few weeks of work and broke my teeth on character and environment designs for none other than Mr Steven Spielberg. Luckily, several of these novice pieces made the cut and snuck into the book. Of course they were my very first pieces ever done in a production environment and they are over 3 years old, but I will still proudly splash them all over the blog very soon.

To celebrate and promote the release Chris Guise is doing a signing at the Weta Cave tomorrow - Saturday, October 15 - from Noon - 2pm. He will be joined by the lovable Frank Victoria.

Chris is also doing another signing at the Weta Cave in Auckland on Sunday 16 October from 11am.

Ambush

Another little environment pic I did. In retrospect, I'm sure it was at least partly inspired by the wonderful 'Game of Thrones' series starring Sean Bean. Although I never looked to it for reference, there's a scene in there where Jamie Lannister (the Kingslayer) waits for Ned Stark outside of what might have been a brothel? I wont spoil the exchange that happens between them in case you havn't seen it yet, but it's a great scene.

I'm a big fan of the series (A Song of Ice and Fire). I began reading George R R Martin when the first book came out and I was stoked to see it realised so well. I'm pretty excited to see the next series of the show. My only complaint about the show is how fast it moves. Obviously you have to make sacrifices and changes to make compelling viewing, but I felt a little that you lost sense of the size of the world. Logistics and travel times are a big issue in medieval times and in the interest of pacing that was often ignored, though it has a big effect on the course of events. I'd be happy to watch 15 or so episodes per book to get a little more detail in there. But if all I can complain about is that it's not long enough, then you know you have a fantastic show :)

Environment Painting

Here's a little piece I did for myself. Trying to loosen up my work a little and get more texture in, but I really don't want it to be arbitrary or sloppy. This one went pretty easily and I'm happy with it. The architecture is inspired by some unusual Japanese thatched homes, hence the pagoda in the background. During our brief visit to Japan there was a 5 tiered pagoda in Nara that really blew my mind. I've been wanting to put one in a painting ever since. Though this one is so distant that I couldn't put any detail on it without ruining the balance of the piece, so I might have to revisit that fixation yet! You may also notice a wee nod to great illustrator N C Wyeth snuck in there.

It's good to be back in the rhythm of these classes. Great atmosphere and great people.
A beer before or burger on the way home never hurts either :P
I've noticed that I always draw better when I have my headphones on and listen to some mellow or upbeat music. Pearl Jam have become a regular staple for my drawing sessions. The music just relaxes me a bit. It also distracts the annoying part of my mind that can be so critical of every mark as it goes down on the page.

Strawberries with the Fuhrer

Hello strangers! Almost forgot how to work this thing.

Anywhoo, here's some new stuff for ya.

I recently did a set of illustrations for a friends documentary project "Strawberries with the Fuhrer". Inspired by the book of the same name, it deals with the thoughts, memories and associated guilt of Helga Tiscenko. Now a grandmother in New Zealand, she was once the content young child of one of Hitler's top Generals in the Third Reich. Many of you will be familiar with the book and may even have read it as part of your studies in school. Director Amy O'Connor was so enthralled by the story that she sought out the author, and even traveled to Germany to create what she thinks of as "an extra chapter for the book". It was screened as part of the New Zealand International Film Festival in Wellington earlier this year, where it sold out it's initial screenings and duly had its run extended. The doco turned out great and Amy has recieved well deserved recognition for her directorial debut.

My images were created to accompany scenes where Helga is sharing specific memories about her youth. Time was tight to complete over 30 illustrations, but I was really happy with how some of the images came out. Here are a couple of them, all from different sequences in the film.

Life drawing at Vincents

I've been making it along to Vincents again recently. It's always frustrating when you havn't been for a while, but I've managed to brush the cobwebs off and had an ok night last night. Here are the drawings from the night. They begin with 2 minute poses and progress to 20 minutes for the portrait. Each age is A3.

Exhibition at the Dowse winds up

It has been a hectic end to summer. Friends have had babies and weddings. The Hobbit is cranking along full steam, I've been doing freelance work in between drawing dwarfs and marauding in pine forests with the Weta airsoft posse. I've also been training with viking blooded Nick Keller, thereby losing the beginning of the Weta-Belly that was forming much to my dismay :) The days have just flown by, but there have been some great times in there. Now the air is chilling and the light changing as Autumn rapidly takes hold of Wellywood.

The White Cloud Worlds exhibition at the New Dowse in Lower Hutt has now closed. Thanks to everybody who stopped by and visited, and for all the kind words that came back about the work and the book. It has been a tremendous experience.

We recently had a day of residency out there (that I forgot to mention ahead of time - sorry!) where I had the pleasure of meeting a host of attendees. Many were genre art fans and hobbyists, though many were not and simply came to the museum unaware it had been hijacked by robots and monsters. Thank you to everyone who came and flipped through my sketchbooks, complementing my chicken scratchings beyond their merit. Patrons gave me names of authors to read, artists to discover and films to check out and generally made what could have been a nervous and awkward afternoon into a relaxing hang-out. Environment Sketches

Whenever I read a good novel, I find my mind constructing the locations in vague yet somehow simultaneously vivid detail. I am often tempted to try and draw those elusive images out of my imagination. However this impulse usually strikes right when the story is getting so involved that I cannot put the book down. So I don't, and I finish the book - usually getting such catharsis from the story's completion that any desire I had to draw those images quickly disappears, and my attention shifts onto something else.

As a Christmas Present last year, my brother generously gifted me the first two novels of 'The Deepgate Codex Trilogy' by Alan Campbell (he must have been quite confident I would like the first one!). The first is called Scar Night, and I read it while camping on the Coromandel Peninsula over Summer. It wasn't a stand out favourite of mine among all the novels I've read, but there were some cool moments and some great locations in the book. As usual I blitzed through to the end without so much as thumbnailing a location or character, but I really want to break that cycle. So I am trying now to put some of those images down.

Of course the process always twists and changes the original thought. Especially now, many weeks after I closed the book, so these are more "Inspired by" the book in some way, as opposed to directly designing it's locations.

Anyway enough words, here are the first very quick sketches (pencil sketch and photoshop colour studies).

Happy New Year!
I've been lurking, slinking around the place pretending Wellington has a summer and that I'm still on holiday to enjoy it. But alas, neither of those things are true. Had a great break up north though, and did a couple of wee watercolours while I was away, which I will post soon.
For now, here's a wee update on the Lovecraft piece from a while ago. It managed to take top honours in the prestigious Gnomon Workshop Forums monthly image challenge. I was super stoked as those guys put out some amazing product. I didn't quite get the piece as finished as I wanted to for the contest, but here it is with very little updated. Is it done? You be the judge. If you look back to the previous version I posted, you can see the changes I was contemplating back then :)

More Watercolours

These watercolours are a bit older. They are from the trip Jo and I took through Asia late last year.
I did a lot of drawings in the journal I was writing in, but I only managed to get a few watercolours done. We were usually too busy going to this temple, or that shrine or some exhibition or other.

Top left image is a beach on Ko Phi Phi (the neighbouring island to the one featured in 'the Beach'). It was a beautiful beach but always had trash laying about, which was very sad for us to see. We are really spoiled here.

Top right is a manicured garden in Japan, though I really didn't do it justice. Their gardens were immaculate and very inspiring.

The bottom double-page piece was painted in Pai, in northern Thailand. We sat on the balcony of a cafe called 'Coffee in Love' and I got a caramel mocha (a very cultural drink). The view was amazing - over the whole valley full of natural forest interspersed with rice paddies. If you've ever been to Asia, you'll know the supernatural green glow that a rice paddy gives off. That was what I was hoping to capture with this piece. It was so incredibly hot that day however that my brushstrokes would dry almost immediately. It put me off a bit, and you can see the texture from where I really had to scrub pigment out of the paper to make adjustments.

This time the lineup is almost as large, and we're on home soil at the Weta Cave.
From 1 - 4pm this Sunday the 14th. There will be a Q&A in the middle, and even the elusive 'Gus' is rumoured to be appearing this time :)

Watercolour Sketches

Well the signing at Unity was a great success. Too many artists to fit behind their large counter - I think 21 contributing artists made it along. It was a heap of fun, as were the beers we all had together afterwards :)
Thanks again to Paul and Kate for all their great efforts in getting White Cloud Worlds off the ground.

As for today's update here are some plein air watercolour sketches. I have completed a bunch of these since I last posted any, and I will post more as I scan them all in.

First up are two I painted in Christchurch this year, shortly after the earthquake. I have family down there, who actually fared reasonably well in the whole ordeal. I had thought to possibly paint some earthquake damage, but Christchurch is such a picturesque little city that I became caught up with the normal sights.

These are painted in a 13x21cm Moleskine watercolour sketchbook.
The first is of an old building across from the new city art gallery in Chrsitchurch. The second is the Avon River, looking North from the Bridge of Rememberance.

White Cloud Worlds - Signing at Unity Books

Hey guys,
There will be a large group of the contributing artists signing copies tomorrow from 5pm. The signing is at Unity Books, 57 Willis Street in Wellington City. I think almost all the artists are coming to this one, so if you want a copy and you want it signed, this is a good time to do it :) Or if you want to do me a huge favour - come along with a copy of the Hangover and pretend to mistake Greg Broadmore for Zack Galifianakis and ask him to sign your dvd. That would make my day! xD

If you can't make it tomorrow though, there will be another signing at the Weta Cave on November 14th - and I'm sure that will have a good artist turnout too :) Hope to see some of you there.

Some more lifedrawings - I havn't posted any in a while though I have been going intermittently.
We had a clothed model last night, in an outfit she made herself for Halloween.

While I've drawn people in cafe's plenty of times, I can't remember ever doing clothed life drawing before. The tight time frames make it a real hurry to try and indicate any local values or materials. But on the flipside, there is more leeway with your structure. I was reasonably happy with these. The first is a 30 min pose, the compiled page is mainly 5 minute poses.

Dragonslide

Hey guys,

This is a new piece I worked on over the weekend called "Dragonslide".
It is pencil on paper and measures roughly 20 x 29cm.
If you want to see it in the flesh it is currently hanging in Deluxe Cafe (next to the Embassy on Kent Terrace in Wellington City). There is a small joint exhibition there between myself, Andy Shaw, Tim Gibson and Guido Thum. Some pieces are originals, others are prints. They were hung yesterday and will be on display for two weeks.

This particular piece is not for sale at this stage. I plan to do a bit more work on the texture of the dragon and eventually hope to carry it through to a finish in oils.

White Cloud Worlds

Hey guys,

There is a fantastic new book nearing release which I have the great priviledge of being a part of.

White Cloud Worlds is due out next month and I got a look at some advance copies - it looks amazing!

It is an anthology of New Zealand fantasy and sci-fi art featuring many of my Weta colleagues and many others besides. Put together by Paul Tobin and Kate Jorgensen, it really is an honour to be included with such great company.

There will be a signing of advance copies at Armageddon in Auckland during Labour weekend, where Paul Tobin, Nick Keller, Gino Acevedo, Claire Hackett and maybe a few others will be signing a very limited number of copies. There will be further signings in Wellington, and a full-on exhibitions of originals and large scale prints at The Dowse starting in December. Details of all these events available on the WCW site.

It is already available for pre-order from all the usual outlets, and a signed, limited edition slipcase version along with an art print is avaiable on the Weta site.

HP Lovecraft

Hey guys,
Did a wee sketch on the weekend for an H P Lovecraft themed contest. It's rapidly getting as dark as the Wayne Barlowe inspired piece I did a few posts back. Had a lot of fun sketching this one up, but not quite satisfied with it to take it to finish yet. I think the Cthulu inspired dragon (yeah, it's a nightmare creature so I didn't worry too much about evolutionary biology for this one) needs to be turned towards us a bit so that we can see his form better than the perfect profile silhouette. I imagine the inside of that mouth lookin a little like the sandworms from Dune, so maybe I'll let us look up inside it a bit more... let me know what you think?

Life Drawing at Vincents

I made it back to Vincents for a thursday night life drawing class. Not many people there this time, so a very quiet class with a cool young model whose name I didn't catch. The poses average a bit longer than the ones in the class at Weta Digital, yet I seemed to get less down for many of the poses! Uncanny how that happens sometimes. I will post stuff from the Weta Digital classes soon.

These are all A3 sized drawings that I've shrunk down and put on pages together. Wish I'd had time to finish rendering up that last one :)

Was having a bit of 'sandbox time' on the weekend - just playing with no real plan for what would come out. I got this dynamic pose that I kinda liked quite quickly, but the scribbled in head looked like it had gigantic ears. This reminded me of a web comic written by a friend and colleague of mine Leri Greer which is called 'the chimpanzee'. It's a fantastically written story with witty dialogue. I hope he finishes it off someday :) The piece ended up taking a bit longer than I had planned but it was good fun.

Here's a wee piece I did for a charity art exhibition that Plunket are putting on.
I've been playing with the old dip / nib pens lately, and this is a piece done with that very tool.
It was a lot of fun despite the lack of undo. When I get around to colouring it I will post that up too :)

Hey guys. Another wee update, the ressurection of my blog continues!
Here is a wee speedpaint I finished off today. Did it over a couple of days - but wasn't a long time at all. Actually pretty stoked with it. Not long ago I couldn't draw boo out of my imagination, and although this is pretty cliche'd and goofy, it came out easy. All that practise must be paying off!
Might work some more into it later in the week. Or just draw something new :P

Weird, cos I never used to - and I still never turn the TV on, its just these high budget shows like Deadwood etc you can get out on DVD or download. Its pretty cool, and also kinda a worry... lotta time goes into watching these things...

Another different approach to the whole thing. Im loving this different approaches thing. I can read a tutorial online etc, and then come do a head without having to think of a subject, look for reference or anything else, I can just focus on applying the new process suggestions I have read - it's all about process baby :D

Ok so I am falling stupidly far behind the numbers for this 50 heads in a month thingy!
So I took cues from some of the others on there and went to pencil to force myself to keep it a bit simpler... Mostly. Haha. Feels good using a pencil again - i didnt touch one for a while there once I first caught on to the digital buzz.
So I chopped through three tonight, need to do more than that to get back on track though...

Another study for the head thread, even though this isnt really head focussed. Was a new approach... again! Inspired by some glorius black and white images on Justin Sweets website i used a hard brush, only painting with black or white, and pressure sensitivity set to size. One brush size (8) and this is the size i worked at. Took a wee while but was quite fun again. I like trying out all these different styles. It must help somehow...

New head. Tried the Mullins scribble, but never bothered looking at his work before i did this! Silly move. I'll take a look at his stuff before my next one. Falling behind schedule badly too, but as longa s i keep at it i'll get a bunch done :)

Ok here's another head ( a cropped in version of an uncompleted image).
Took a completely different approach today - worked in a way I've never worked before.
Partly from looking at zhu zhu's work and wip stills, partly from an inspiring conversation I had with my girlfriend today. I wanted to be more analytical and observe more closely while working. So I consciously painted with hard edged brush no pressure sensitivity. And i painted dabs. Blending with a couple texture brushes after.
I learned lots and even though it's not as good a likeness as I'd like i really enjoyed the process and am pleased with the result at this point.
Might continue with it tomorrow, or later in the week, though if i keep getting more and more detailed, I'll never get through 50 in a month :P

Ok so there's an anatomy challenge on cgtalk at the moment.
Rebecca Kimmel, one of the greatest moderators known to man, is running a challenge to draw a whopping 50 heads in one month. All from master works!
Should be fantastic learning. Though it is almost two a day! SHEESH!
Well i did the first one today.

Here's a work in progress of the centaur illustration.
I'll keep you posted on progress. It's been fun and I've learnt a bunch from this one.

More centaur stuff. Still shying away from reworking the actual illustration :P
But this was heaps of fun to draw. Drawing skeletons would teach you a lot about cotour and overlapping linework i reckon.
Maybe ill have to put some time into sometime soon?
